A few years ago, a woman brought in several DVDs of images scanned by another service company and asked if River City Image Works could make a slide show from the images to play on her television's DVD player. (The images were scans of 35mm slides, mostly from her father's service in Vietnam.) I said that I could and proceeded to open one image file at random.
We found the image to be out of focus and to have muddled colors (see the two images on the right side, below). She was quite disappointed, and--since she had all the slides in the trunk of her car--asked if I could do better job of scanning the slides. She found the slide corresponding to the image we chose at random and I scanned it right in front of her, taking no particular pains or applying any "heroic" methods, other than good, efficient technique on excellent, properly-calibrated equipment. She was quite pleased with the new scan (see the two images on the left side, below).
The story had a happy ending: She had me print an 8x10" glossy from each of the two scans. Confronted with this "evidence", the other company refunded her scanning fee, explaining that when they "get busy" they often tend to rush jobs and/or have their children help out with the scanning. I scanned her thousands of slides--over several weeks--and she was delighted with the quality of the work. At River City Image Works, your job is never rushed or completed in a shoddy manner!
